2025年4月12日（土）〜4月20日（日）、京都大学吉田寮ビリヤード室にて、ケニア・ナイロビのキベラスラムの若者たちの創造性と希望に満ちた日常を切り取った写真展を開催します。

写真が映し出す、創造と希望の力

エシカル・クリエイティブ・コレクティブ「SHIFT80（シフトエイティ）」は、KYOTOGRAPHIE 京都国際写真祭のサテライトプログラム「KG＋」に出展し、ケニア・ナイロビのキベラスラムに暮らす若者たちの日常を捉えた写真展を開催いたします。会場は京都大学吉田寮ビリヤード室、会期は2025年4月12日（土）から4月20日（日）まで。

 

本展示「私たちの暮らしにようこそ。さあ、対話しましょう。」では、これまで活動をともにしてきたキベラスラムの若者たちの生活を捉えた作品を展示します。スラムと聞くと「貧困」「絶望」といったイメージを抱きがちですが、実際には驚くほどの創造性とエネルギーが満ちています。彼らは限られた資源の中で廃材を活用し、鮮やかな色彩で住居を装飾し、独自の生活空間を創造しています。その家賃は月数千円であり、展示会場である京都大学吉田寮の寮費と同等ですが、暮らしには大きな違いがあります。

 

キベラスラムは100年以上の歴史の中で、病気や犯罪、強制撤去といった厳しい現実を抱えながらも、独自の倫理観と共同体の力で生き抜いてきました。本展示では、そうした生活の片鱗を写真で紹介するだけでなく、被写体となった若者たちとオンラインで直接対話できる機会を設けています。鑑賞者は、写真から感じた疑問や感想を彼らに伝え、彼ら自身の言葉を通じて新たな視点を得ることができます。

 

ドキュメンタリー写真展を超えた対話の機会に

本展示の最大の特徴は、「写真を“見る”だけでなく、被写体と“話せる”」というユニークな体験ができる点です。 写真を見た後、その被写体本人に「あなたにとって、この部屋はどんな意味を持ちますか？」と聞ける。そんな写真展が、これまであったでしょうか？

また、展示空間の演出も特徴の一つです。京都大学吉田寮の歴史と混沌に満ちた空間に、キベラスラムのリアルな生活風景が浮かび上がることで、まるでスラムの一角に入り込んだような没入感を生み出します。

11年間にわたる現地の活動で培った信頼関係があるからこそ実現した本展示。この展示が遠く離れた人間同士を繋ぎ、新たな気づきをもたらすことを願います。

"Capturing the Reality of Kibera, Kenya’s Largest Slum"

A photography exhibition showcasing the creativity and hope-filled daily lives of young people in Nairobi’s Kibera slum

Photography as a Reflection of Creativity and Hope

The ethical creative collective SHIFT80, will participate in the KG+ Satellite Program of KYOTOGRAPHIE Kyoto International Photography Festival to host a photography exhibition featuring the daily lives of young people living in Nairobi’s Kibera slum, Kenya. The exhibition will take place at the Kyoto University Yoshida Dormitory Billiard Room from April 12 (Sat) to April 20 (Sun), 2025.

Titled "Welcome to Our Lives. Let’s Engage in Dialogue.", this exhibition showcases the lives of young people in Kibera with whom SHIFT80 has been collaborating for years. While the term "slum" often evokes images of poverty and despair, the reality is filled with creativity and vitality. Within limited resources, they repurpose discarded materials, decorate their homes with vibrant colors, and create unique living spaces. Their rent is only a few thousand yen per month—comparable to the dormitory fee at Kyoto University’s Yoshida Dormitory—yet their living conditions differ significantly.

With over 100 years of history, Kibera has faced challenges such as disease, crime, and forced evictions. However, its residents have developed a strong sense of ethics and community resilience to survive. This exhibition not only presents glimpses of their lives through photographs but also offers visitors the unique opportunity to engage in live online conversations with the people featured in the photos. Visitors can share their thoughts and questions, gaining fresh perspectives directly from Kibera’s youth.

More Than Just a Documentary Photography Exhibition

The defining feature of this exhibition is that it’s not just about viewing photographs—it’s about engaging with the people in them. Imagine being able to ask the subject of a photo, "What does this room mean to you?" This exhibition offers an experience unlike any other.

Additionally, the exhibition space itself plays a crucial role. The historic and chaotic atmosphere of Kyoto University’s Yoshida Dormitory will serve as a backdrop, allowing the raw and vibrant reality of Kibera’s everyday life to stand out, creating an immersive experience.

This exhibition is made possible through 11 years of trust and collaboration with the Kibera community. We hope it will foster connections across distances and inspire new realizations.
